    Tyler Baxter PT, DPT, OCS, ATC, CSCS is the Clinic Director at Orthopedic Physical Therapy Institute. Tyler earned his Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree from Eastern Washington University. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Athletic Training (ATC) from Washington State University, as well as a Certification as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). A lifelong learner, Tyler has continued to pursue advanced training and is working towards his Certification in Orthopedic Manual Therapist (COMPT) through the North American Institute of Orthopedic Manual Therapy (NAIOMT) throughout his professional career.

    Tyler is highly skilled in the treatment of all orthopedic diagnoses. He is especially interested in working with patients with shoulder, low back, neck, hip, knee, and ankle injuries. Tyler utilizes an eclectic approach to treating his patients, incorporating manual therapy techniques, therapeutic exercises, functional activities, and home exercise program instruction. A compassionate and friendly individual, Tyler enjoys not only the diverse types of diagnoses seen at OPTI, but the diverse patient populations we treat and the opportunity to get to know patients with unique life experiences. An effective communicator, Tyler is adept at really listening to his patients, which allows him to customize a treatment program that meets their specific needs in order to achieve the best outcome from therapy.

    Brian Scherr, MPT, CSCS, physical therapy, joined the Orthopedic Physical Therapy Institute in July 2016. He graduated from Loma Linda University in 1997 with his Master’s degree in Physical Therapy. Brian has served as the Rehabilitation Coordinator for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Major League Physical Therapist for the Anaheim Angels. Since leaving baseball, he has worked as a staff Physical Therapist and Clinic Director. Brian is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, certified in Graston Technique and Neuro Structural Taping. He enjoys working with athletes and the active population. His 19 years of experience has afforded him opportunities to continue to grow his skills through the continuum of the life span.

    Brian also enjoys teaching and volunteering. He is active in the community with youth sports, athletes, and church. He enjoys community lectures and educating colleagues as well as the public. Brian has also had the opportunity to work with several start-up companies.

    In his free time, Brian enjoys spending time with his wife, Julia, and two children. He enjoys the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and the wonderful opportunities the Pacific Northwest offers. He is excited to bring his talents to OPTI.

  • Cristen Schmidt PT, DPT

    Staff Physical Therapist

    Located in our Coeur d’Alene office

    Cristen is a 2016 graduate from University of New England with a Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree. Additionally, Cristen received a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Exercise Science from Boise State University.

    Having experienced injuries herself, Cristen is passionate about treating the orthopedic population. Specifically, Cristen is interested in treating knee and shoulder diagnoses. Being a continuous learner, Cristen plans to advance her skills by working towards multiple certifications which include: a Board Certified Specalist in Orthpedics (OCS), a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification, a Graston Certification, and a Certification in Orthopedic Manual Therapy.

    Outside of work, Cristen enjoys being active. She enjoys water sports, hiking, being active in the gym, and spending time with her family. She is most excited for the opportunity to return to the Pacific Northwest and work alongside a great team of health care providers at OPTI and OSSM.

    Shawna received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from A.T. Still University and her Bachelors in Health and Human Performance from Montana State University. Shawna is a board certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) and currently pursuing her Certification in Orthopedic Manual Therapy (COMT) with a Maitland Australian approach. She has experience in treating all orthopedic conditions, post-op rehabilitation, and spine care. She has a strong interest in orthopedics and manual therapy. Shawna believes in a functional approach when treating patients and looking at the whole body, Shawna’s hobbies include long distance running, hiking, traveling and enjoying the great outdoors with her husband and two sons.

  • Michael Gallis, PTA

    Staff Physical Therapy Assistant

    Located in our Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls offices

    Michael graduated from Spokane Falls Community College with his Physical Therapy Assistant degree in 2015. He previously earned a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science in 2013 from Eastern Washington University. Michael is excited to join the OPTI team and work alongside the other therapists to provide quality patient care.

    Originally from Spokane, Michael completed his long term clinical rotation in Coeur d’Alene and enjoyed the area and treating patients in North Idaho.

    In his spare time Michael enjoys spending time with his family, playing all kinds of sports and hiking.

  • Adam Wheeler, PT, DPT, OCS

    Adam is a 2012 graduate of California State University at Long Beach with a Master’s degree in Physical Therapy. Additionally, Adam holds a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science.

    As a former competitive athlete himself, Adam particularly enjoys working with student athletes as they recover from injury or surgery. He is particularly interested in knee, shoulder, and ankle injuries. A diligent and thoughtful problem solver, Adam relies on the latest research and therapeutic techniques to help his patients achieve their rehab goals.

    As a native of Coeur d’Alene, Adam is happy to be home with family and friends. In his free time, he plays guitar and enjoys the great outdoors by snowboarding, wakeboarding, and hiking with his dog Riley.

    Since graduating from the University of Manchester Cliff has had the opportunity to work in acute care hospital settings, industrial rehab, home health, skilled nursing facilities and Outpatient physical therapy. He also started Performancedge Sports Training in which he had the opportunity to work with area high school athletes from Coeur d’Alene, Lake City, Lakeland, Timberlake and Post Falls, as well as NIC basketball, soccer and softball teams. He completed extensive certification through Frappier Acceleration Sports Training on performance enhancement, injury prevention and is certified on the ACL bridge program to get athletes from injury back to sport. He also attended extensive training at the University of Florida for neck and back injury and treatment and is Medx certified.

    Cliff joined the OPTI team in August of 2016 to a part North Idaho’s best physical therapy team. Cliff uses effective communication for identifying the problem, education and goal setting, observation, orthopedic testing, manual therapy, exercise therapy, kinesio taping and various electo therapies.

    Hobbies include being part of the Two Wheeler Bicycle Race Team, riding off road motorcycles, skiing, hiking, mountaineering, hunting and fishing.
